What is the difference between forearm crutches and underarm crutches?
Forearm crutches (also called elbow crutches) feature a cuff that wraps around the forearm, allowing the user to release the handle without dropping the crutch.
They are lower-profile, encourage better posture, and are preferred for long-term or permanent mobility needs. Axillary crutches rest under the armpit and are typically recommended for short-term recovery, though they can cause nerve damage if used improperly for extended periods.
Are forearm crutches suitable for both temporary and permanent use?
Yes. Forearm crutches are an excellent choice for both short-term injury recovery and long-term or permanent mobility support. Because they distribute weight through the hands and arms rather than the armpits, they reduce fatigue and the risk of nerve compression, making them well-suited for everyday long-duration use.
How do I adjust the height of my forearm crutches?
Stand upright wearing your usual footwear and let your arms hang naturally at your sides. The handle of the crutch should align with your wrist crease.
When gripping the handle, your elbow should be slightly bent approximately 15–20°. FDI crutches adjust via push-button pin clips; press the button, slide the shaft to the desired height, and release until the pin clicks into place.
How do I clean my crutches?
Wipe down the frame, cuff, and handle with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid harsh chemical solvents, bleach, or abrasive cleaners as these can degrade the foam padding, rubber grips, and anodised finish. Allow to air dry fully before use. The cuff padding can be removed on most models for separate washing.
